Period blood carries stem cells and disease markers. Jo Barry on the 2026 research and the cost of calling it waste.
In a lab in Lithuania, researchers took material from period blood, applied it to damaged cartilage from osteoarthritis patients, and measured what happened next. The cartilage held up better. That study was published in Scientific Reports in February this year, and I've yet to meet one person outside the field who heard about it.
I had stage 4 endometriosis for most of my life. Seven laparoscopies. Two bowel resections, a ureter stent, a laparotomy, a hysterectomy. In every one of those rooms, the blood was a problem to be managed. Never once a source of information. We built a global industry on the assumption that it's waste. Nobody checked.
It was never just blood
Menstrual blood is not just blood. It's blood, endometrial cells, immune cells, proteins and other biological material. It's also the only tissue sample in medicine that turns up on its own, monthly, for about forty years, with no needle and no Medicare item number. Every other sample costs somebody a procedure. This one knocks.
The cells doing the interesting work
Menstrual blood carries stem cells, known as MenSCs, and researchers are studying whether they can support tissue repair. They release signaling molecules, growth factors, and tiny packages called extracellular vesicles that can influence other cells and regulate inflammation.
The Lithuanian study put those extracellular vesicles onto cartilage taken from osteoarthritis patients. Collagen II and aggrecan production went up. Breakdown markers went down. The cartilage maintained its structure even when inflammation was deliberately induced. Laboratory dishes only, no humans, nowhere near a clinic. A 2024 paper in Tissue and Cell found that the same cells sped up wound healing in diabetic rats. Rats. Everything here is early, and I'm not pretending otherwise.
The reason it's plausible at all is that it's sitting in your pelvis. The endometrium builds, breaks down and rebuilds hundreds of times across a lifetime, without scarring. Nothing else in the body does that. Researchers didn't stumble upon period blood. They went looking for the best regenerator we have, and it was in the bin.
The bit that makes me want to throw something
I've written about the diagnosis wait properly already, in The Endometriosis Test I Needed. Short version: 6.5 to 8 years in Australia, mine ate 40cm of my bowel while it ran, and tests that read markers instead of cutting you open are finally moving.
What that piece didn't cover is where some of those markers are being read from. In 2024, the FDA cleared a menstrual pad built as a diagnostic device from a company called Qvin. In July 2025, a Penn State team published research on a test strip that pulls HMGB1, a protein linked to endometriosis, from menstrual blood in 10 minutes. Proof of concept, early, not in your pharmacy.
So the thing the category was designed to make invisible is turning out to be where the answer lives. I was told it was normal for years. It wasn't. A ten-minute strip would have been f*cking nice.
The asterisk, because I am not doing that to you
This does not mean you should rub period blood on a cut, or that menstrual blood is some kind of DIY healing serum. Most of this research is still in the laboratory or in animal models, with some early human clinical research. Researchers are studying isolated cells and their biological products, not suggesting that raw menstrual blood is a medical treatment. The internet will get to this story eventually and it'll probably go straight to face masks. Do not be the face mask.
The ick had a budget
Blood from a shaving cut, fine. Blood at the dentist, fine. Blood on a football field gets replayed in slow motion to two million people, with commentary and a sponsor. Period blood turns up and everyone finds something else to look at.
That flinch decided what got funded, what got published, what got collected and what got thrown away. It was never a vibe. It was a line item.

Awkwardly, the reason labs can work with menstrual blood at all is that somebody solved the collection. Cups are the standard in much of this research because a cup provides a clean, intact sample with no needle and no nurse.
