Finding Balance: Eddie Nelson on Mindful Wellness

Scarlet Period interviews founder of Bred Ed, Eddie Nelson

As the founder of Bred Ed, Eddie Nelson has built a community around breathwork and Pilates. Here she talks about the importance of slowing down, tuning into your body’s needs, and embracing practices like breathwork, mindfulness, and body movement for a more balanced life.

Name: Eddie Nelson

Day job: Breathwork and Pilates practitioner

Location: Sydney, NSW

What led you to pursue breathwork and Pilates?

I found breathwork and Pilates years ago, and they transformed both my body and mind. I wasn’t in a good headspace - everything was always hard and I was always anxious. After practicing for years, I got certified in both and built a community and business around them.

What’s your approach to nutrition?

I don’t follow any specific diet. I listen to my body’s needs and go from there. I used to push myself, avoiding food groups and skipping rest days, but now I’ve learned to slow down, release trapped emotions through breathwork, and trust my body. On a typical day, I eat a high-protein breakfast, sometimes fast in my follicular phase, fruit, decaf coffee, sunlight, movement, and breathwork. Lunch is usually meat and salad, or a toastie, and dinner is meat and veggies. But other days, it’s a burger and chips, then pizza!

What’s your number one health message for all women?

Slow down, tune into your body, and listen. We are cyclical beings.

How do you incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine?

Each morning, I practice slow breathing with one hand on my womb and the other on my heart. I journal how I feel, take deep audible sighs, and shake my body for 3-5 minutes.

What's an underrated wellness practices that deserves attention?

Breathwork. It’s been used in ancient traditions for thousands of years, and it’s slowly coming back. All the answers are within ourselves, and it starts with the breath.

Do you have any non-negotiable daily health practices?

Always barefoot in nature at some point during the day (or all day!). Movement depends on my cycle. When bleeding, I focus on stretching, walking, and light yoga. Breathwork (slow nasal breathing) is also essential

What advice would you give your younger self about wellness?

Slow down, calm down, reduce screen time, and spend time naked in nature!
