The PFAS-Free Period Guide

The PFAS-Free Period Guide

PFAS have become the buzzword nobody asked for in period care. They show up in headlines, in scientific reports and, alarmingly, in some pads, tampons and period underwear. The conversation can feel noisy, so here’s the clean, calm, facts.

What PFAS Actually Are (In Human Language)

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They’re a large family of chemicals used in everything from non-stick cookware to waterproof jackets. Their superpower is resistance: water, oil, stains, and heat. Great for a camping tent. Less great for something that sits against the vulval skin for hours.

PFAS stick around - in the environment and, potentially, in our bodies. That’s why they’re often called “forever chemicals.” Not because they’re dramatic, but because they don’t break down easily.

Why They’ve Shown Up in Period Products

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: some brands treat their fabrics or absorbent layers with PFAS to increase moisture resistance or stop leaks. Sometimes it’s intentional. Sometimes it’s contamination somewhere along the supply chain. Either way, it’s not something consumers are told.

Independent testing has found PFAS in pads, tampons and reusable underwear, including products labelled as “natural” or “organic.” Not great. Not transparent. Not what your body deserves.

What the Research Says

Scientists are still studying the long-term impact of PFAS exposure. Concerns include hormone disruption, environmental build-up and potential health risks with chronic exposure. The keyword here is potential. But when it comes to products used on the most absorbent, delicate skin you have? “Potential” is a big enough reason to demand better.

The Scarlet Standard: PFAS-Free, Always

For us, PFAS-free isn’t a marketing line. It’s a design principle. We use materials that don’t require PFAS treatments. We test. We verify. We chose independent auditors. And we work with suppliers who understand that “close enough” isn’t close enough when it comes to vulval skin and pelvic health. Transparent, breathable fabrics. Clean design. No hidden coatings. No forever chemicals.

How to Shop PFAS-Free Without Detective Work

PFAS can hide behind long chemical names, so here’s how to shop smarter in seconds:

  • Look for explicit PFAS-free claims. If a brand doesn’t mention it, assume they haven’t tested.
  • Ask for third-party reports. A credible brand will show you real test results, not vague promises.
  • Choose breathable, untreated fabrics. The simpler the material list, the safer it tends to be.
  • Support reusables where it works for you. Fewer products, fewer unknowns, less environmental waste.
  • Be wary of “waterproof” + “stain-resistant” + “no explanation.”
